If you have spent any time on the global top ten charts this month, you have likely seen a title that looks different from the usual gritty crime procedurals or high-school romances. Pursuit of Jade arrived on screens on March 6 and immediately began to dominate the digital landscape. It is a C-drama—a term for television dramas from mainland China—and it is currently proving that language is no barrier to a massive hit.

The premise subverts the typical tropes of the historical genre. Fan Changyu, played by Tian Xiwei, is the daughter of a butcher. She is proficient with a blade, though her skills are usually reserved for the market stall rather than the battlefield. She meets Xie Zheng, played by Zhang Linghe, a nobleman who has lost his status and seeks to settle an old score. They enter a marriage of convenience to survive a dangerous political climate, a setup that leads to a bond tested by national conflict and personal vendettas.

Global rankings and audience reception

The show reached a popularity index of 10,000 on iQIYI within six days of its release. This is a significant internal metric for the platform, but the impact extends far beyond domestic borders. According to Google Trends, the series ranked first in search volume for Chinese dramas in 15 markets, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

On the community database MyDramaList, the series opened with a score of 9.0 and eventually climbed to 9.1. This represents the highest debut for a Chinese drama on that platform in the last two years. The appeal lies in the chemistry between the two leads, who are established stars in the genre. Zhang Linghe is known for his roles in Story of Kunning Palace, while Tian Xiwei gained a following for her work in New Life Begins.

What sets this apart from other period pieces is the character of Fan Changyu. Rather than waiting for rescue, she eventually takes her butcher’s knife to the front lines. The story focuses on her resilience as much as the political maneuvering of the male lead. The production team, led by director Zeng Qingjie, opted for a visual style that emphasises the harsh realities of their world alongside the romance.

The international interest has also caused a surge in viewership for the actors’ previous projects. Several older titles featuring Zhang Linghe have reappeared on the all-time top ten charts for iQIYI International. This suggests that new viewers are using Pursuit of Jade as an entry point to explore the wider world of Chinese television.

How to watch the series

You can find Pursuit of Jade on two major streaming platforms. iQIYI offers the series globally with subtitles in 14 languages and several dubbed versions. Netflix also secured the rights for a simulcast release, making episodes available shortly after they air. The show consists of 40 episodes, with new installments dropping regularly throughout March and April.
