BTS has officially reclaimed the top spot on the American charts. Their new album, Arirang, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week, moving 641,000 equivalent album units. This performance marks the group’s seventh chart-topping record and signals a massive return following their hiatus for mandatory military service.
The figures are particularly striking in an era dominated by digital streaming. Of the total units, 532,000 were “pure” album sales—physical and digital copies purchased by fans rather than just streamed. According to Billboard, this is the highest sales week for a group since 2013, surpassed only by One Direction’s Midnight Memories.

While physical sales were high, the album’s digital footprint was equally significant. Within its first twenty-four hours, Arirang broke the record for the most single-day streams for any album released in 2026 on Spotify. It also delivered the band’s most successful streaming day in the history of Apple Music.
The project features fourteen tracks and a diverse list of collaborators, including Ryan Tedder, Diplo, and JPEGMAFIA. The lead single, “SWIM,” has already become a fixture on global playlists, supported by a high-profile music video and a Netflix concert special filmed at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.

A major driver of the debut’s success was the release of seventeen different vinyl variants. These editions accounted for 208,000 copies sold, marking the sixth-largest vinyl sales week in the modern era. BTS now sits just behind Taylor Swift in the rankings for the most successful vinyl launches.
The album’s rollout included various CD packages containing collectible items, a strategy that has become a hallmark of the group’s relationship with their global fanbase. This commercial momentum arrives just before the group embarks on an expansive world tour, which begins in South Korea this April before heading to North America.
Reuniting After Military Service
The success of Arirang serves as a final answer to questions about the group’s longevity. All seven members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—spent the last few years completing their military obligations and exploring solo careers.
In a documentary accompanying the album, the members discussed the challenge of reuniting after their time apart. Jin, who was busy with prior tour obligations during much of the writing process, noted that the group’s twelve-year history made it easy to find his place again. The result is a project that critics have described as a stronger, more mature version of the band that first took the world by storm.
