Amazon MGM Studios has begun work on an adult animated adaptation of Monstress, the hit comic book series that has dominated industry awards for years. The studio has recruited Steven Maeda, who recently led the successful live-action transition of One Piece at Netflix, to spearhead the project.
The series is currently in development for Prime Video. It follows a young woman in an Asian-inspired fantasy world who carries a literal monster within her body. Her journey to avenge her mother’s death and uncover her own history places her at the center of a brutal war between human and supernatural forces. Along the way, she travels with a distinctive group, including a talking cat and a fox-human hybrid.

The source material, published by Image Comics, is one of the most decorated titles in modern publishing. Written by Marjorie Liu and illustrated by Sana Takeda, the series has earned seven Eisner Awards and four Hugo Awards. In 2018, it was named Book of the Year at the Harvey Awards.
Both Liu and Takeda will serve as executive producers on the animated series, ensuring the transition from page to screen remains close to their original vision.
The Creative Team Behind the Adaptation
Steven Maeda will act as writer and executive producer. He is joined by Tiffany Greshler, who worked alongside him on One Piece. The two will share showrunning duties. Maeda’s career includes significant roles in era-defining television, such as The X-Files and Lost.
The production also includes executive producers Jason Brown and Ryan Stayton from Hivemind. The creative team faces the task of translating Takeda’s intricate, Art Deco-influenced art style into animation—a style that helped the comic stand out in a crowded market.
Exploring the “Monstrosities” Within
At its core, the project aims to explore the philosophical questions posed by the books. The producers describe the story as an investigation of how individuals maintain their humanity when the world treats them as monsters. By using an adult animated format, Amazon seems to be doubling down on mature fantasy content, following the success of shows like The Legend of Vox Machina and Invincible.
No release date has been set, but the involvement of such high-profile television veterans suggests the studio is treating the adaptation as a major priority.
