A mother has shared the gut-wrenching moment her elementary school-aged daughter broke down in tears after being subjected to months of racial taunts at school. Christa Thao, an Asian-American mother from the Midwest, recorded her daughter Adi’s emotional collapse to prove to school administrators that “intent does not erase impact.”
The footage, which has now been viewed more than 3.5 million times, shows young Adi weeping as she asks her mother a question no child should have to ask: “Mom… why are people mean to Asians?”
‘A Child in Pain’
The bullying reportedly took place during gym, music classes, and in the classroom. Adi told her mother that a group of girls she considered friends would pull their eyes back to mock her facial features.
The students also allegedly made racist remarks by calling Adi and another Asian student “sisters,” claiming they could not tell them apart. Even when Adi begged them to stop, the taunts continued for months.
“That video captured what a child in pain looks like when she finally feels safe enough to speak,” Thao said. She explained that she chose to record the moment because she didn’t believe a simple email would convey the true depth of the hurt her daughter was carrying.
School Takes Action
Following the incident, Thao sent an urgent email to the school principal, counselors, and the district superintendent. The school responded by reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and launched an immediate investigation.
Administrators met with Adi to ensure she felt protected before speaking with the students involved and notifying their parents. Measures are now in place to monitor the situation and prevent the behavior from returning.

At home, Thao and her husband sat Adi down for an honest conversation about resilience and self-love. “We reminded her that our Asian eyes are beautiful, that hers are perfect, and that no one should ever make her feel ashamed of who she is,” Thao shared.
A Message to Other Parents
While the video brought an outpouring of global support—with strangers sending gifts and encouragement—it also attracted a “tsunami” of racist and threatening comments, leading Thao to eventually remove the original post.
Addressing critics who questioned why she filmed her daughter’s distress, Thao was blunt. She argued that those who focus on her parenting instead of the racism are missing the real problem.
“No child should cry over features they were born with,” she said. “I shared her story because children experience this kind of harm quietly every day. If my daughter’s story helps even one child feel seen, then her voice mattered.”
