SEVENTEEN just rewrote Tiny Desk history. By stepping behind NPR’s famous cluttered desk, the group officially became the very first K-pop band to perform on the beloved concert series — a landmark moment for both the show and the genre.

SEVENTEEN’s name itself reflects the group’s structure: 13 members + 3 teams + 1 group. Those three units — hip-hop, vocal and performance — fuse into one powerhouse, known to millions of fans (Carats) as SEVENTEEN, or SVT for short. Fresh off celebrating their 10th anniversary with a massive world tour that filled stadiums across the globe, five members made an unusual pit stop: trading arenas for what was likely the smallest audience they’ve played for in years.

After wrapping their final U.S. tour stop in Washington, D.C., JOSHUA, MINGYU, SEUNGKWAN, VERNON and DINO slid into the NPR Music office, surrounded by memorabilia from past performers — though none from K-pop until now. Despite coming from an industry defined by polish and precision, the members put their trust in the Tiny Desk team, letting the stripped-back setup bring out a different, more vulnerable side of SEVENTEEN.

The quintet breezed through a setlist that showcased a cross-section of their catalogue: ‘Darl+ing,’ ‘_WORLD,’ ‘SOS,’ ‘Rock With You,’ ‘CLAP’ and ‘HOT.’ They opened with ‘Super,’ and the intimacy of the room quickly dissolved any nerves — at least once the crowd’s deafening cheers kicked in. “We did not expect this kind of response,” VERNON admitted, clearly stunned. “You guys are awesome, thank you so much.”

Tiny Desk magic was everywhere: banter between songs, fans shouting “VERNON, you’re my bias!” (cue a perfectly timed hand heart) and the group laughing through an impromptu a cappella version of ‘HBD’ at a fan’s request. “We’re having so much fun because of you guys,” VERNON later added. “We were honestly super nervous to perform in such a setting. So thank you for making us feel so comfortable. You really boosted our confidence.”

Their relaxed chemistry was even more impressive considering the last-minute pressure they faced. DK had originally been scheduled to join the performance but lost his voice just days before the shoot. Not only did the five remaining members pick up his parts with almost no time to prepare, but they also reworked the arrangements overnight — and executed them flawlessly. Given the circumstances, it’s a minor miracle that the set turned out this cohesive.

The medley of old and new tracks built toward one of SEVENTEEN’s most iconic live moments: the explosive closer ‘VERY NICE,’ sparking the room into a full-on jump-and-chant session of “Aju nice.”

This historic Tiny Desk debut arrives as the full 13-member group — also featuring S.COUPS, JEONGHAN, JUN, HOSHI, WONWOO, WOOZI, THE 8 and DK — continues touring their 2025 album Happy Burstday, which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200. On Nov. 29, their Ventelin Dome Nagoya show will livestream in cinemas worldwide to mark a decade of SEVENTEEN.
