During Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary event, legendary game designer Hideo Kojima dropped a major surprise: the first teaser trailer for Death Stranding: Mosquito, an anime film set within the universe of his critically acclaimed games.
The initial trailer for Death Stranding: Mosquito is a true visual standout. The anime features a bold, comic book-style look with pencil-like shading, a significant departure from the glossy aesthetic of most modern anime. This distinctive art direction, from the Japanese animation outfit ABC Animation Studio, amplifies the moody, atmospheric feel of the Death Stranding universe.
The film is being written by Aaron Guzikowski, known for his work on the sci-fi show ‘Raised by Wolves.’ While familiar characters like Sam Bridges will make a return, this will be a new story rather than a direct adaptation of the games.
The Mystery of ‘Mosquito’
The teaser offers only a few cryptic hints about the film’s plot. We see a man with a strange, tentacled object on his face, swimming in water and later fighting a person in a porter suit during a Timefall. A follow-up conversation with Kojima and animation director Hiroshi Miyamoto revealed that the word “Mosquito” refers to the main character, who has the ability to “suck…something.” We’ll just have to wait to find out what that is.
No release date has been set for ‘Death Stranding: Mosquito’ yet, but the trailer alone has amped up anticipation for this new project.

A Look at Kojima’s Expanding Universe
The animated film wasn’t the only big news from the event. Kojima also provided updates on his other projects, including:
- ‘OD – Knock’: A new, spooky trailer for his horror game collaboration with Jordan Peele and Xbox, showcasing a first-person perspective reminiscent of the ‘P.T.’ demo.
- ‘Physint’: His new PlayStation exclusive, which he described as a spiritual successor to the ‘Metal Gear’ series.
- A new AR game: A collaboration with Niantic Spatial (the ‘Pokémon Go’ developer) for an augmented reality title that will make real-world objects interactive.
Kojima also shared new details on the upcoming live-action Death Stranding movie, directed by Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One). Sarnoski revealed that the film will not be an adaptation of the games and will not necessarily feature any of the same characters, though he remained tight-lipped on the film’s actual plot.
Kojima’s tenth anniversary event provided a comprehensive look at a bustling future, with projects spanning across games, film, and new media, all promising a taste of his zany, unforgettable style.
