Jon Miyahara, who brought quiet charm and impeccable comedic timing to his role as Brett on NBC’s Superstore, has passed away at the age of 83. Miyahara’s daughter, Pennie Cappasola, confirmed he died on 6 August with his wife, Chiyo, by his side.

Appearing in 105 of the show’s 113 episodes between 2015 and 2021, Miyahara’s Brett became a fan favourite for doing what few sitcom characters could — making people laugh without barely saying a word. In fact, Brett’s one and only line — a panicked “Oh s***” as a tornado hit the Cloud 9 store — became a Superstore legend.

News of his passing was first shared by co-star Colton Dunn (Garrett), who wrote on Instagram, “John was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team… It was an honor to know him and work with him.”

Tributes soon followed from fellow castmates Kelly Stables, who commented Kelly Stables commented: “Oh man! He was always so sweet,” and Irene White, who added “What an incredible man.” Superstore writer-producer Sierra Teller Ornelas remembered him as “literally the sweetest man.”

While Brett’s screen time often played in the background of Superstore’s big storylines, his presence anchored the show’s quirky workplace family — a reminder that comedy doesn’t always need big speeches to leave a lasting impression.

Fans will also recall the Season 3 opener, “Brett’s Dead,” which saw Cloud 9 employees mourning their missing co-worker after a tornado. The twist? Brett wasn’t dead at all — just avoiding the storm from the comfort of his own home.

Miyahara leaves behind a legacy of understated brilliance, proving that even in a world of punchlines, sometimes the biggest laugh comes from silence.

Superstore is streaming in full on Peacock.
