In a highly anticipated move, Michelle Yeoh is set to return to Chinese-language cinema with a starring role in the new Media Asia film, Miss R. This project will be the Oscar-winning actress’s first Chinese film since she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress.

The movie, directed by Bai Xue and produced by Wen Muye, pairs Yeoh with Chinese actor Liu Haoran for the first time. Liu is slated to play Wu Youwei, a mysterious Rubik’s Cube master who runs a stall at a night market.

A Rebellious Protagonist

In ‘Miss R,’ Yeoh will take on the role of Zhao Yanhong, a rebellious 70-year-old woman who consistently causes trouble in her nursing home. Her life takes a significant turn after her chance encounter with Wu Youwei. The concept poster for the film hints at this, with some of the Rubik’s Cube panels replaced with everyday objects, such as a wire brush, a yarn ball, and pills. These fragmented visuals are intended to represent the daily life of the protagonist.

The character of Zhao Yanhong is said to mirror Yeoh’s own personality, particularly her willingness to embrace new challenges regardless of age, which makes her portrayal of the headstrong and youthful character even more compelling.

This is a significant project for both Yeoh and the Chinese film industry, bringing a newly minted Oscar winner back to a domestic production. The film is set to capture the attention of audiences both in China and internationally, as it blends a compelling human story with a unique artistic vision.
