Dichen Lachman, whose dual roles in Severance earned her critical acclaim and Emmy buzz, has officially joined the cast of Rob Savage’s new supernatural horror film. The project, currently untitled, is based on the unsettling book Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, author of Bird Box. Lachman is set to star alongside Jessica Chastain and Jay Duplass.
The film centers on eight-year-old Bela, whose life is already strained by her parents’ difficult marriage. Things take a terrifying turn when a sinister entity, which Bela calls “Other Mommy,” emerges from her closet. This malevolent presence persistently asks, “Can I go inside your heart?” Bela refuses, but “Other Mommy’s” manifestations become increasingly aggressive, threatening the safety of Bela’s family. This premise promises a truly unsettling and escalating horror experience.
Lachman is no stranger to the genre space, having appeared in major franchises like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Jurassic World: Dominion (where she also reprised her role in the animated series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory). Her recent work on Apple TV+’s Severance has cemented her as a versatile talent, and she will also be seen in the upcoming second and third seasons of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender. Her diverse body of work also includes roles in Altered Carbon and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The film boasts some major firepower behind the scenes. It’s being produced for Universal by the formidable duo of Atomic Monster (James Wan’s company) and Blumhouse, in association with Spin a Black Yarn. James Wan is producing, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Macdara Kelleher, Rob Savage, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis serving as executive producers. The screenplay adaptation comes from Nathan Elston of Succession.
