Henry Golding, who played the charming Nick Young in the hit 2018 film, Crazy Rich Asians, has shared an exciting update on the upcoming television series based on Kevin Kwan’s book series. Speaking on the Today Show, Golding hinted at the expanded scope and potential of the Max and Warner Bros. production.
“Everybody’s excited,” Golding revealed, confirming the enthusiasm surrounding the project. He also mentioned recent meet-ups with key collaborators, including his Crazy Rich Asians co-stars Awkwafina (Nora Lum) and Gemma Chan, as well as the film’s co-writer Adele Lim, who is set to serve as executive producer, writer, and showrunner for the series. “I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and Gemma [Chan] in London not too long ago to discuss where we’re heading.”

Golding emphasized the opportunities that a series format offers compared to the film. “We have a larger, longer-running format because we’re doing a series. We have so much runway to really share the world you kind of got a glimpse of in Crazy Rich. We’re really excited to show more,” he added.
While Golding stopped short of a formal confirmation of his own involvement, his comments strongly suggest that many key players from the original film are eager to revisit their characters and explore the rich world Kwan created. As reported previously, the development room for the series is officially open, with Lim at the helm. Film director Jon M. Chu and author Kevin Kwan are also on board as executive producers.
Notably, this TV series is not intended to replace the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 movie. Chu and Warner Bros. Pictures are reportedly still actively developing that project. Instead, the Max series will be a drama based on Kwan’s entire book series, which includes China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems, and Lies and Weddings, offering a broader canvas to explore the intricate relationships and opulent lifestyles of the characters.

The original Crazy Rich Asians film followed the story of Chinese-American Rachel (Constance Wu) and her fiancé Nick’s (Golding) journey to Singapore, where Rachel discovers the immense wealth and complex social dynamics of Nick’s family and friends. The ensemble cast also featured talents like Michelle Yeoh, Harry Shum Jr, and Awkwafina.
Golding, who also attended the Met Gala recently, mentioned to E! News that he had also discussed the series with Adele Lim during her visit to London. His enthusiasm for the project and the reunion with his fellow cast and crew members signals a promising future for the Crazy Rich Asians universe on the small screen.
