The Chinese animated film ‘Ne Zha 2’ has stormed the global box office, becoming the first animated movie to surpass $2 billion in earnings. This remarkable achievement comes after just 33 days in theaters, fueled by a massive release during the Chinese New Year period.

Directed by Jiaozi, ‘Ne Zha 2’ has captivated audiences, earning a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s success is a testament to the growing strength of China’s film industry, which has increasingly produced its own blockbusters in recent years.

“We’re witnessing the rise of China’s film industry, and ‘Ne Zha 2’ is leading the charge,” one industry analyst commented.

Out of its $2 billion total, nearly $1.96 billion comes from China alone, making it the highest-grossing film ever in a single country. This surpasses the previous record held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.  ‘Ne Zha 2’ is now on track to overtake ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in worldwide earnings, securing its place among the top five highest-grossing films of all time.

The film’s success also marks a significant milestone for animated films, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Inside Out 2’. Notably, ‘Ne Zha 2’ achieved this with a considerably lower production budget.

This phenomenon reflects a broader trend in the global film industry. Over the past decade, the Chinese market has transformed into a powerhouse, capable of producing and sustaining its own blockbusters. While Hollywood films once dominated the Chinese box office, homegrown productions like ‘Ne Zha 2’ are now taking center stage.
