Last Breath plunges viewers into the treacherous world of deep-sea saturation diving, and director Alex Parkinson doesn’t hold back. This isn’t just a movie; it’s a gritty, real-life survival story brought to the screen with a blend of intense realism and Hollywood talent.

The film, starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole, revisits the harrowing experience of Chris Lemons, Duncan Allcock, and David Yuasa, divers working on undersea gas lines in the North Sea. When Lemons becomes trapped, the team faces a desperate race against time. Parkinson, who previously documented their story in a 2019 film, returns to dramatize the events, giving audiences a visceral experience of the divers’ struggle.

SLiu, in an interview with NBC News, emphasized the film’s demanding nature and the powerful camaraderie it fostered. “On the surface, no pun intended, it’s this incredible story about survival in one of the most treacherous environments you can experience on the planet,” Liu shared. He described the film as “a window into the lives of these people who work in a field that I don’t think anyone grows up thinking about or really knowing about.”

Liu highlighted the intense training he and Cole underwent, stating, “I had to do all of my dive training [with Finn] and he was the perfect dive partner because we needed actors that really loved being in the water.” He further explained the necessity of a strong bond, “Because, if you even have a slight hesitancy or the idea of scuba diving for two months straight, four dives every day feels even a little bit scary or claustrophobic to you, then you probably shouldn’t do a movie like this.”

Ultimately, Liu summed up the film’s core message: “It’s a story about perseverance, the human spirit and never giving up.”

Despite a lukewarm box office run, “Last Breath” has garnered positive reviews, boasting a 79% Certified Fresh rating from critics and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the film’s tension, efficient storytelling, and Liu and Harrelson’s performance.

Now, audiences can experience this thrilling survival story from the comfort of their homes. Last Breath is currently available to rent or purchase on digital platforms. For those who prefer physical media, the film will also be released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 29th, complete with bonus features, including the Into the Deep: Making Last Breath behind-the-scenes documentary.
