Move over, John Wick, there’s a new retired assassin in town, and he’s packing a dad bod. Sakamoto Days is the latest anime to take Netflix by storm, and it’s got everything you could want: over-the-top action, hilarious gags, and a surprisingly heartwarming story about family and redemption. And the numbers prove it! Since its second week on Netflix, Sakamoto Days has consistently ranked in the top 10 most-watched shows, racking up millions of views and holding strong with 7-8 million hours viewed weekly. That’s a whole lot of assassin-turned-family-man action!

This isn’t your typical edgy action series. Taro Sakamoto, the former world’s deadliest hitman, has traded in his guns for groceries. Now he spends his days running a convenience store with his wife and daughter, but his peaceful life is constantly interrupted by ghosts of his past.

What makes Sakamoto Days so damn entertaining is the contrast between Sakamoto’s unassuming appearance and his ridiculous strength. He’s basically One-Punch Man with a mustache and a penchant for pork buns.

Sakamoto’s out-of-practice physique and unassuming appearance belie his incredible strength and skill. Despite his claims of diminished abilities, he effortlessly overpowers most enemies, resulting in entertaining and exaggerated fight scenes.

But it’s not all about the action. Sakamoto Days also has a lot of heart. Sakamoto’s love for his family is the driving force behind the story, and his interactions with his quirky apprentice, Shin, and the energetic Lu Shaotang, provide plenty of laughs.

Sakamoto Days is a refreshing take on the action genre, blending exhilarating fight choreography with genuine humor and heartwarming moments. Its unique blend of genres and its unlikely pairing of characters enables it to step out of the shadow of its inspirations, and the story is only just getting started.”
