Sandra Oh, the acclaimed actress known for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve, has finally won her first Emmy Award after 14 previous nominations. The win came for her work as a producer on the Hulu film Quiz Lady, alongside co-star Awkwafina and writer Jen D’Angelo.

Oh was absent from the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony on Sunday, September 8, as she was in Canada. However, her co-producers were surprised and delighted to learn backstage that this was Oh’s first Emmy win. “We were astonished to learn from a reporter that she had never been awarded a TV Academy honor before,” Awkwafina and D’Angelo shared.

Quiz Lady tells the story of two estranged sisters who team up to help their mother pay off her gambling debts. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and was later released on Hulu.

Reflecting on the film’s journey, D’Angelo described it as “a turbulent ride.” Filming took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the premiere coincided with the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. “We shot during Covid, we premiered during the strike, and we just sort of like kept going,” D’Angelo said. “We were the original comedy that could, and it’s just been so wonderful to be able to share it with the world and to be able to have nights like tonight to celebrate it.”

Oh’s previous Emmy nominations spanned her work on Saturday Night Live, Killing Eve, and Grey’s Anatomy. Her win for Quiz Lady is a testament to her talent and perseverance in the television industry.

In a June interview with the LA Times, Oh spoke about the significance of Quiz Lady, describing it as “a broad comedy with Asian characters who weren’t rich and famous but belonged to the working class with real-world problems like divorced parents and a family that hasn’t been in touch and isn’t close.”

Oh’s Emmy win is a cause for celebration for both the actress and her fans. It’s a reminder that hard work and dedication can pay off, even after many years and numerous nominations.
