Jamie Chung has opened up about her DC Universe debut in which she voices the first Asian American Harley Quinn.

At Entertainment Weekly’s 2024 Comic-Con studio, Chung joined her Batman: Caped Crusader costars Hamish Linklater (Batman) and Minnie Driver (in a secret role) for a chat about the series, which premieres on August 1 on Prime Video.

Chung revealed that her Harley Quinn is refreshingly independent. “She doesn’t have an association or an identity with the Joker,” Chung explained. “She is her own person—twisted, twisted sick person.”

Reflecting on her role, Chung noted, “What I loved about this character was we flipped this around. She’s very welcoming, she’s very bubbly as a psychiatrist.” She added, “It was really fun to play with the range. I tried something different.”

The creative process included some adjustments: “We actually had to rerecord much of Harley Quinn’s parts because they saw something and wanted to go more in that direction,” Chung shared.

Nostalgia played a part in her experience too. “Even watching the intro for the show, it brought back so many memories from my childhood,” Chung said. She appreciates how the creators “reimagined these characters” and “flipped the switch a little bit.”

Chung also recounted her initial attempt to mimic the original Harley Quinn voice by Arleen Sorkin, only to be advised to explore a new approach.

The animated series, which follows Bruce Wayne’s evolution into Batman, also features voices from Christina Ricci and Haley Joel Osment.
