Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is heating up its casting search for the fan-favourite earth-bending master, Toph Beifong. The series, recently renewed for two more seasons, is determined to find an authentic and inclusive portrayal of the character.
Casting director Jenny Jue describes Toph as a “mid-late teens, blind, female, Asian” character who is “sassy, confident, and unfiltered.” The show is actively seeking actors who are blind or have low vision, with dance and/or martial arts experience being a plus.
Supervising producer Teresa Huang emphasized the team’s commitment to finding “a young Asian actress who is actually blind or low vision.” Huang encouraged fans to spread the word and share information about anyone who might fit the role, even if they have no prior acting experience.
The news has ignited excitement among fans, with many praising the show’s dedication to inclusive casting. “This is so exciting!” one fan exclaimed on social media. “As a visually impaired person I am so happy to see the commitment to authentic casting holding strong. I can’t wait to see who will portray her in the series.”
Another fan expressed their renewed interest in the show, stating, “This will bring me around to watching the show for real. I appreciate your efforts.”
