An interracial family in California have received a racist letter asking them to move out

Daily Republic reports that an interracial family in California have received a racist letter from their neighbours, asking them to vacate the area.

Marc Yu, who is Chinese-Filipino, posted the letter that his family received on Facebook.

“We pride ourselves for the cleanliness and quiet atmosphere in this area,” the anonymous letter read. “The community is making this request that you find another place to live. Renters like yourselves cannot possibly afford a home in our area. We maintain higher standards that allow us to maintain the value of our homes which as renters you will never understand.”

Yu has been living in the home since November 2018 with his Mexican wife and five children.

“This is not a ghetto,” the letter continued. “we family suggest you rent somewhere else. We may sound harsh but your interracial family is not welcome here. We will contact your landlord and tell them to evict you if you don’t vacate in the next 60 days.”

“The clock is ticking,” the letter concludes.

Vacaville Police Department Lt Mark Donaldson said the police are looking into the matter.

“We had several people contact us, who were concerned about the letter,” he said. “It is just a nasty, disgusting letter,. This is not anything we condone. This does not represent our community. This is a diverse community and we want everyone to feel welcome in their homes.”

However, the police department are not entirely sure what to charge the suspects with if they are caught.

“For a hate crime there has to be a criminal offense like vandalism or an assault,” Donaldson said. “This is just very disappointing. This is not who we are as a community.”

Yu said his family had received racist abuse in the past too. “This was not the first time we had a letter but this was the final straw,” Yu said. “We aren’t going anywhere. We love our home and the neighborhood.”

His message to the person who wrote the letter is, “They need to check themselves into a mental institute because what you did was really stupid and uncalled for.”

Police ask anyone with information the letter to contact the Vacaville Police Department at 449-5200.
