The legal fallout from an alleged gang rape at Cornell University has expanded into an international internet search. Earlier this month, a former student filed a 101-page civil complaint in New York, alleging that seven members of the school’s Chi Phi fraternity drugged and assaulted her over seven hours in October 2024.
Among the seven men named as defendants is Winston Lee, a Cornell undergraduate widely identified in public records and university forums as a South Korean national.
The lawsuit’s emergence has triggered widespread anger over the initial lack of criminal prosecution and the leniency of Cornell’s administrative disciplinary process. At the time of the internal inquiry, the university expelled two students, while requiring others to attend workshops or submit disciplinary essays. None of the seven men faced arrest.

The public disclosure of the lawsuit has changed the legal landscape. Matthew Van Houten, the Tompkins County District Attorney, announced that his office has reopened the criminal inquiry and plans to present evidence to a grand jury.
“We want to re-examine whether there’s additional evidence that we were not aware of in November of 2024, that exists now that would change our assessment of the case and would result in the grand jury finding that there was criminal conduct,” Van Houten said.
The Allegations Inside Chi Phi
The civil complaint describes an attack that began when the woman visited the Chi Phi chapter house to meet a male acquaintance. While there, she alleges, fraternity members coerced her into taking ketamine before assaulting her.
The filing states that members broadcast messages to a chapter Snapchat group, inviting other residents to the upstairs rooms. The plaintiff states that multiple men joined the assault while she remained immobilised by narcotics, moving her between rooms until she lost consciousness near dawn.
The victim’s attorney, Thomas Giuffra, condemned the failure of bystanders to intervene.

“There were so many people that could have prevented it and they didn’t,” Giuffra told reporters. “Not one of these guys was arrested. Not one. That I can tell you for a fact.”
Named defendants alongside Lee include Matthew Ingalls, Johnathan Newell, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris, and Scott Kretzschmar. Through their legal representatives, Kretzschmar and Norris have denied engaging in sexual misconduct, though Norris acknowledged sending messages in the fraternity chat group.
Online Tracking and Questions Surrounding Winston Lee
As news of the reopened criminal inquiry spread, public attention focused sharply on Winston Lee. Online communities began documenting his academic and personal background, noting that he attended Seoul Foreign School, graduated from UWC Atlantic in Wales, and served as a student council representative before matriculating at Cornell.
Professional profiles linked to Lee listed expected graduation in 2027 alongside a record of service in the Republic of Korea Army.
Conflicting reports about his current status have fuelled discussions across Reddit and X. Some commenters suggested he had returned to South Korea to fulfill military obligations. Students on the Ithaca campus reported seeing him attending classes in person this term.
“Winston Lee is not in Korea,” one female student posted on social media. “He returned to Cornell and is currently attending classes. We were not made aware we were in class with a defendant in this suit.”
Other commentators noted that South Korea does not permit dual citizenship for adult males completing military duty, raising concerns online that legal name differences could complicate jurisdiction if a defendant leaves the country before grand jury proceedings conclude.
Institutional Scrutiny and Community Demands
Cornell University has faced intense criticism over its handling of the initial reports in 2024. Kyle Kimball, vice president for university relations, released an official statement confirming that the institution barred the Xi chapter of Chi Phi from campus while internal offices adjudicated the complaint.
“Federal privacy law prohibits Cornell from disclosing specific information regarding individual students and we therefore are unable to make a public statement on any other disciplinary response,” Kimball said, noting that policy violations can result in suspension or dismissal.

With the district attorney now assembling a case for a grand jury, community members, student organisations, and prominent cultural figures have demanded full institutional accountability. Actor Florence Pugh joined calls supporting the plaintiff, urging male peers to challenge complicity in sexual violence.
As the grand jury review nears, the focus remains on whether civil proceedings and renewed criminal investigations will hold all seven named defendants, including Winston Lee, legally accountable.
