One of Japan’s most enduring cult films, Survive Style 5+, will return to UK cinemas from 10 September before making its world UHD and Blu-ray debut on 19 October.

Released by Third Window Films, the director-approved 4K restoration gives Gen Sekiguchi’s eccentric, visually maximalist comedy a fresh theatrical and home-entertainment outing. The film stars Tadanobu Asano, known for Shōgun and Ichi the Killer, alongside former footballer and actor Vinnie Jones.

Often celebrated for its deliriously colourful style and unpredictable multi-strand storytelling, Survive Style 5+ follows five interconnected stories that move between marital dysfunction, hypnosis, a relentlessly resurrecting wife, a family of bizarre advertising performers and a British hitman navigating Tokyo.

Screen Anarchy previously described it as “one of the best Japanese comedies ever produced” and among the most “lushest and vibrant productions” to reach the screen.

The restored version will premiere at London’s Prince Charles Cinema on 10 September, followed by screenings across the country.

The 2,000-copy limited edition also comes with a 00-ring artwork edition by Gokaiju and a -page booklet containing archival material and new writing by critic Simon Abrams.

A standard Region B Blu-ray edition will also be released on the same day, presenting the new 4K master in 1080p, in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 5.1 sound, English subtitles and the same interview and making-of extras.
