Romantic cinema often relies on the delicate chemistry of its central couple to anchor an improbable premise. Henry Golding has signed on to star opposite Lindsay Lohan in the upcoming Netflix romantic feature Return to You, pairing two experienced leads in an emotionally charged drama rooted in the technology of the late two-thousands.
Mark Waters, who directed Lohan in Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, directs the project from an original screenplay by Eric Champnella. Brad Krevoy produces alongside Lohan, with executive production handled by Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend, Galen Fletcher, and Champnella.
Set in 2008, the plot centres on a successful yet isolated lawyer, played by Lohan, who mistakenly receives a DVD recorded by a terminally ill woman for her husband, portrayed by Golding. Drawn into the emotional gravity of the message, the lawyer uses the recorded details on the disc to locate the grieving widower, setting off a search that alters both of their lives.
A Reliable Leading Presence in Contemporary Romance
The casting reinforces Golding’s standing as one of Hollywood’s most dependable leading men in the romance genre. Since his international breakthrough as Nick Young in Jon M. Chu’s 2018 smash Crazy Rich Asians, the thirty-nine-year-old British-Malaysian actor has repeatedly anchored character-driven romances and dramas.
He led Paul Feig’s festive favourite Last Christmas opposite Emilia Clarke, took the central role in Hong Khaou’s meditative indie feature Monsoon, and recently starred in Nacho Vigalondo’s sci-fi romance Daniela Forever.
His collaboration with Lohan brings together two performers with deep genre pedigrees. Lohan continues her sustained relationship with Netflix following successful holiday titles including Falling for Christmas, Irish Wish, and Our Little Secret.

Golding has maintained an unusually diverse production slate across streaming and theatrical spaces. Beyond romantic roles, he led the action franchise entry Snake Eyes, collaborated with Guy Ritchie on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and the Netflix television series The Gentlemen, and joined the ensemble of the second season of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers.
