The enduring vitality of second-generation K-pop often reveals itself in unexpected ways. Girls’ Generation members Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Choi Sooyoung have officially joined forces as Girls’ Generation-HRS, releasing their debut digital single, “Skibidi”.
Distributed through SM Entertainment, the two-track project marks the latest subunit from one of the most successful pop acts in South Korean history. The release arrives accompanied by the B-side track “Lowkey In Love” across major streaming platforms, complete with an official performance video.
Turning an Internet Joke into an Official Release
The trio’s collaboration owes its existence to casual digital comedy rather than a corporate boardroom plan. The project grew out of Hyoyeon’s personal YouTube channel, “Hyo’s Level Up”, specifically a recurring sketch series titled “Fake Kim Hyoyeon”.
In those videos, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung staged playful rivalries, jokingly competing for positions such as main vocalist, lead dancer, and centre. The chemistry proved immediate. Hyoyeon formally proposed launching an official unit in a September 2025 video, turning an informal web series into a sanctioned commercial release.

Longtime fans of the group will remember that the three performers previously shared the stage as a dance unit dubbed “S.H.Y”, performing an energetic cover of Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” during Girls’ Generation’s Phantasia tour in 2015 and 2016.

Arabic Strings and Retro Dance Pop
The new single introduces two distinct musical arrangements. The title track, “Skibidi”, opens with house rhythms before shifting into hip-hop, combining heavy percussion with Arabic-inspired string melodies. SM Entertainment stated that the lyrics carry a message about independence and forging a new path together.

The second track, “Lowkey In Love”, takes a brighter direction. Built on upbeat brass, a prominent bassline, and warm dance-pop melodies, the B-side leans into a relaxed, vintage atmosphere.
The trio previewed both tracks live ahead of the official release, performing at the 2026 CassCool Festival at Seoul Land in Gwacheon on 22 August.

A Legacy Spanning Nearly Two Decades
Girls’ Generation debuted as a nine-member ensemble under SM Entertainment in 2007, quickly becoming an international pop benchmark through hits like “Gee”, “Genie”, and “I Got a Boy”. Following the departure of Jessica in 2014, the group continued as an eight-piece act, eventually celebrating their fifteenth anniversary in 2022 with the album Forever 1.
While each member has pursued thriving individual careers across television drama, variety broadcasting, and fashion, Girls’ Generation-HRS offers longtime listeners a light-hearted return to the group dynamic.
