Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman has reunited with The Avalanches on their mesmerising new single, a track that feels less recorded than unearthed. Australian electronic shapeshifters The Avalanches first shared ‘Blue Shadows’ with Karen O as a mood-driven demo, a strange, singular piece Robbie Chater never expected anyone to sing over.
What she sent back still leaves him stunned months later: a vocal that’s “achingly forlorn” and somehow sounds like it has always existed as a song, as if she slipped into a space that was quietly waiting for her.
“When Robbie sent me ‘Blue Shadows’ I jumped at the chance to collaborate,” Karen O said, according to a press release. “The Avalanches last record We Will Always Love You was a gift to humanity in 2020 and I’ll count it as one of my Top 10 forever. The Avalanches frequency is high, I’m so happy to be asked to slide into it.”

It’s also a meeting of deep musical lineages. Karen O has long been a defining voice of 2000s and 2010s indie rock, wielding raw emotion and theatrical vulnerability as the face of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, while The Avalanches made their name as meticulous collage artists, building worlds out of samples, crackle, and memory.
