Trinity CineAsia has secured the distribution rights for Scare Out, the new counter-espionage thriller from legendary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou. The film is set to hit cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 20 February 2026, coinciding with the Lunar New Year celebrations.

The acquisition marks a first for the distributor, as it is their first release from the acclaimed director. Zhang Yimou, often called a leading light of China’s “Fifth Generation” of filmmakers, is best known for classics like Hero and Raise the Red Lantern.

A high-stakes hunt for a mole

Scare Out tells the story of a National Security squad tasked with a high-priority mission. They must track down a traitor responsible for leaking sensitive intelligence regarding China’s latest fighter jet technology.

What starts as a high-tech investigation within military circles soon spills out into civilian life. As the hunt intensifies, the team faces a series of setbacks that suggest the threat might be coming from within. The plot centres on a tense “silent battle” where trust is scarce and the stakes are national.

A star-studded cast

The film features a cast of prominent Chinese actors. Jackson Yee, known for his roles in Better Days and Full River Red, leads the ensemble alongside Zhu Yilong, who recently starred in Only the River Flows. They are joined by award-winning actress Song Jia.

“We are very excited to bring Zhang Yimou’s Scare Out to UK and Ireland audiences,” said Cedric Behrel, Managing Director of Trinity CineAsia. He noted that Zhang’s work has long been a gateway for international audiences to discover Chinese cinema.

Release schedule

Audiences will not have to wait long to see the thriller. While the main theatrical release is scheduled for 20 February, selected cinemas will offer early previews starting from 17 February. This allows the film to open “day-and-date,” meaning it premieres in the UK at the same time as its domestic release in China.

This release follows a string of successful titles from Trinity CineAsia, including the animated hit Ne Zha 2 and the crime epic Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.
