The singer Kim Junsu is set to appear on the South Korean music programme M Countdown for the first time in nearly two decades.

Junsu, who first found fame as a member of the groups TVXQ and JYJ, has been largely absent from major television music shows since 2009. His return marks a significant moment for fans who have followed his career through years of legal and industry challenges.

A return through musical theatre

This television appearance is tied to his latest stage project rather than a solo music album. Junsu will perform alongside the cast of the musical “Beetlejuice,” which is currently running at the LG Art Center in Seoul.

While some fans expressed a wish to see him perform his own songs, many see this as a major victory. One fan noted that it was special for Junsu to return through the musical theatre industry, as it was the platform that allowed him to keep performing when television was not an option.

“Transitioning to musical theater really was the best thing Junsu could have done for himself,” one supporter said. “Over 15 years later and he’s a legend on the scene.”

The end of a long-standing industry ban

Junsu’s long absence from broadcasting follows a public legal dispute with his former agency, SM Entertainment. After he and two other members left the group TVXQ to form JYJ, they faced significant difficulties appearing on South Korean television.

Industry observers suggest that changes in management at his former agency may have helped clear the path for this return. Fans pointed out that the 17-year gap is so long that a new generation of K-pop idols has been born and debuted in that time.

What to expect from the performance

The upcoming broadcast on Thursday, 12 February, will feature a performance from the Korean production of “Beetlejuice.” Junsu plays the lead role in the show, which is known for its high energy and eccentric style.

The musical is scheduled to run in Seoul until late March 2026. This performance is expected to be one of the most-watched segments of the week, as long-term fans and new viewers tune in to see the veteran performer back on a music show stage.
