Apple TV+ is leaning deeper into the travelogue game, and this time it’s teaming up with Awkwafina for its next big journey. Fresh off the success of The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, which wrapped its third season, the streamer is hitting the road again with the comedy star front and centre.

The Farewell and Crazy Rich Asians actor is set to host and executive produce The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina for Apple.

The eight-episode series follows Awkwafina — aka Nora Lum — on a cross-country culinary adventure that’s as personal as it is playful. Exploring the evolution of contemporary Asian American cuisine, she begins by tracing her own family’s roots.

Awkwafina’s family once ran Lum’s, a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, NY, widely recognised as the first Chinese restaurant in the city. But despite growing up in the family business, she freely admits she can’t cook at all. Even instant ramen is a gamble.

Joined by chefs, restaurateurs, and her own relatives, she travels across the U.S. to discover what it truly takes to master Asian cooking — and whether she can reimagine Lum’s legacy for a new generation.

Produced by ITV-owned Twofour, the same team behind The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, the series brings together Awkwafina, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies as executive producers.

“I’ve never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me. Food has been a huge part of my family’s history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity,” said Awkwafina.
