FX’s Shōgun is officially returning for a second season — and the upcoming chapter of the award-winning samurai saga promises higher stakes, new faces, and a major leap forward in time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on Shōgun Season 2 will begin in January 2026 in Vancouver, with the story set 10 years after the events of the first season. The new timeline will explore the aftermath of Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s rise to power and the shifting political landscape of feudal Japan.

Both Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are confirmed to reprise their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English navigator John Blackthorne respectively.

Joining them are several new additions. As Deadline reports, “New additions include Asami Kizukawa in the role of Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda.”

Other returning cast members from Season 1 are also expected to appear, though details remain under wraps.

The creative team behind Shōgun has teased an even more ambitious continuation of the series, expanding beyond the events of James Clavell’s original novel. Variety reports that the new season will feature “unprecedented battle sequences and an unexpected romance alongside the series’ 10-year narrative leap.”

Describing the tone of the new season, the show’s creators called it “a saga first and foremost,” signalling a sweeping exploration of war, love, and legacy in a rapidly changing Japan.

The first season of Shōgun became one of FX’s most acclaimed dramas, praised for its visual authenticity, nuanced performances, and respectful portrayal of Japanese culture. Its success also marked a milestone for Asian-led storytelling in mainstream Western media.

With a decade-long time jump, Season 2 offers a chance to explore the long-term consequences of Toranaga’s ambitions and the evolution of those caught in his orbit. The expanded cast and larger scale promise to push the boundaries of historical drama once again.

FX and Hulu have yet to announce a release date, but with filming set for early 2026, fans can likely expect Shōgun to return sometime in 2027.

Until then, audiences can anticipate a deeper, more expansive return to the world that redefined the period epic for a global audience.
