Netflix and Sony have reportedly struck a deal for another KPop Demon Hunters movie, with the animated musical sequel expected to drop in 2029, according to Bloomberg. Animated films take time — a lot of time — to make, which could explain the four-year gap between installments. That said, timelines in animation are never set in stone, so things could still shift depending on how production unfolds.

Netflix and Sony both declined to comment.

First released directly on Netflix under Sony’s licensing deal, KPop Demon Hunters became an unexpected cultural moment. The fantasy adventure — centered on a fictional K-pop girl group saving the world from demons with their music — quickly turned into the streamer’s most popular movie of all time.

The film’s soundtrack also helped fuel the frenzy. Three original songs — ‘Golden,’ ‘Your Idol,’ and ‘Soda Pop’ — have stayed strong on the Billboard Hot 100, and could even make a showing at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

The movie’s success was so massive that Netflix, typically allergic to theatrical releases, broke its own rules. Over the summer, the streamer released a sing-along version of the film for fans in cinemas — twice. The first event in August pulled in roughly $18 million in just two days, and a Halloween re-run brought in another $5 to $6 million, even though the film had already been available for months.

KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang, who helmed the film alongside Chris Appelhans, has made no secret of her hopes for a sequel.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang told Variety in July. “Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”

With Huntr/x set to make their big return, fans might be in for another supernatural — and sonically charged — ride. But if history’s any indication, it’ll be worth the wait.
