NetEase Games and developer Naked Rain have just dropped a brand new gameplay trailer for Ananta, and it looks like a genre-blending wild ride. This free-to-play urban RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, is set to be a major highlight at Tokyo Game Show 2025, where it will be playable for the first time. The game is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices.

A City Full of Possibilities

The trailer for Ananta showcases a massive open world, Nova City, that seems to pull influences from all over the gaming landscape. You’ll play as a special task force captain, but the game lets you step into other roles too, like a hacker, delivery driver, or livestreamer. Each role reportedly comes with its own gameplay elements and storylines, seamlessly blending everyday life with extraordinary adventures.

And the movement system looks incredible. The game features an “ultra-free 3C” system that allows players to “climb, swing, and scale to any visible point in the city.” This Spider-Man-like traversal, combined with a variety of vehicles like “taxis, cars, buses, subways, and even helicopters,” gives players a level of freedom reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto.

Combat and Chaos

The combat in Ananta looks just as dynamic. The fights appear to be beat-’em-up style, with an emphasis on improvisation. You can grab everyday items like “trash cans and golf clubs” and use them as weapons, all while using a system of dodges and parries that feels similar to Sleeping Dogs. You’ll also be able to control other characters across the city to help you out during missions.

But what makes Ananta truly unique is its embrace of the surreal. The trailer is filled with bizarre and hilarious moments, including a “toilet sprinting down the street” and other oddities that make the city feel alive and unpredictable. This blend of gritty realism and absurd comedy creates a world where anything seems possible.

Ananta is set to be a huge title for NetEase, and Zhipeng Hu, Lead Producer and Executive Vice President, is confident in its potential. “As our first completely single-player focused experience from NetEase Games, after two decades of deep dedication to the gaming industry, we are prepared to deliver a truly epic and cinematic experience for players around the world,” he said.

There’s no release date yet, but players can pre-register for the game and get a hands-on preview at Tokyo Game Show 2025. It’s looking like a wild ride!
