Lucy Liu has been cast to lead the upcoming Peacock crime drama, Superfakes. Liu, known for her versatile career across film and television, is set to portray a small-time luxury counterfeit dealer whose ambition to secure a life of suburban stability for her family pulls her into a much more dangerous black-market underworld.
The series comes from creator Alice Ju, a writer and co-executive producer on the hit Netflix series Beef. Ju will serve as the showrunner for Superfakes, which is being produced by A24 and Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
Executive Oversight and the Safdie Influence
The production has attracted several significant industry names behind the camera. Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, the filmmaking brothers known for their gritty, kinetic style in films like Uncut Gems and Good Time, are attached as executive producers.
Liu will also executive produce the series alongside Ju, the Safdies, Howard Klein and Olivia Gerke of 3 Arts, Ronald Bronstein, and Eli Bush.
Alice Ju has a history with the production companies involved, having worked as a writer and consulting producer on the popular Peacock series Poker Face and collaborating with A24 on Beef.
The Actor’s Latest Roles
Liu’s starring role in Superfakes is the latest in a busy period for the two-time Emmy nominee. She is currently filming the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. Liu also stars in and produced the upcoming indie feature Rosemead, which explores the life of an immigrant widow. Her recent credits also include the Prime Video action-comedy Red One and the Netflix limited series A Man in Full.

Superfakes, which was ordered to series by Peacock in January, is positioned to blend an exploration of contemporary American identity with the high stakes of a criminal procedural. It aims to satirize the counterfeit luxury market while maintaining a grounded human perspective on the drive for security and success.
