The highly anticipated reunion of K-drama stars Kim Woo-bin and Suzy is almost here. The two will star in the upcoming Netflix fantasy rom-com series, Genie, Make a Wish, which is set to premiere on October 3. This marks the first time the actors have worked together since their 2016 drama, Uncontrollably Fond. The series promises a new take on the genie-in-a-lamp story, blending ancient magic with modern romance.

A Perilous Wish

The show, written by Kim Eun-sook (The Glory), centres on a mischievous wish-granting genie named Genie (Kim Woo-bin) who has been trapped in a lamp for a thousand years. He is awakened by a cold and impassive young woman named Ka-young (Suzy), who has spent her life under her grandmother’s care to keep her psychopathic tendencies in check.

Genie, who is secretly Satan, is hell-bent on proving that humans are corruptible. He offers Ka-young three wishes, believing she will use them for selfish gain. But Ka-young, who has no emotions and finds Genie’s incessant temptations merely bothersome, challenges his belief with a “best-of-five, three-wins bet” over human nature. If Genie proves that humans are corruptible, she will use all her wishes and “even die at his hands.” If she wins, she gets to keep the lamp.

This high-stakes gamble sets the stage for a whirlwind romance that will be anything but ordinary. The two, who hurl insults at each other and even push each other from heights, are seen in the trailer passionately kissing and dancing a waltz across time and space.

An All-Star Cast

The series features a stellar cast of characters. Ahn Eun-jin (Hospital Playlist) plays Mi-joo, a mysterious woman with a retro charm, while Noh Sang-hyun (Pachinko) plays Genie’s brother and rival, Soo-hyun, the “Angel of Death” who confronts Genie after about a thousand years.

The cast also includes Ko Kyu-pil (The Roundup: No Way Out) as Genie’s assistant, a jaguar-shaped spirit beast who lives as a human, and Lee Joo-young (The 8 Show) as Min-ji, Ka-young’s only friend.
