Gemma Chan is taking on a whole new frontier: gaming. The British actress, known worldwide for roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel’s Eternals, has officially joined the cast of IO Interactive’s upcoming 007 First Light.

The announcement, revealed during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show showcase, marks the very first time Chan has lent her likeness and voice to a video game — and it’s a career move that feels as bold as it does timely.

Chan will play Dr. Selina Tan, a brand-new character created specifically for the game. As MI6’s Head of Tactical Simulation, Tan oversees an elite training program designed to sharpen the skills of the agency’s most promising recruits.

With a background in psychology, strategy, and immersive technologies, Tan represents a fresh kind of authority figure in the Bond universe — one that merges intellect, innovation, and intensity. It’s a role that seems tailor-made for Chan, whose career has often straddled the line between commanding gravitas and forward-looking storytelling.

007 First Light itself is being pitched as a cinematic reimagining of Bond’s origin story, with IO Interactive weaving their trademark stealth-action gameplay into a blockbuster-level narrative. Players can expect the full spy toolkit: stealth, gadgets from Q Branch, melee scraps, shootouts, and the kind of set pieces you’d expect from the franchise — including a fight spilling out of a hacked airplane mid-air.

But beyond the action, IO is putting heavy emphasis on performance, with a cast that already includes Patrick Gibson as a young James Bond, Priyanga Burford as M, and Lennie James as Bond’s mentor, John Greenway.

Chan’s addition elevates the project beyond just gaming hype. It’s another reminder of how video games are increasingly drawing in A-list talent, blurring the lines between film, television, and interactive storytelling.

For Chan, who’s carved out space in both indie dramas and Hollywood blockbusters, stepping into Bond’s world through gaming feels like a natural evolution — and a signal of where pop culture is headed.

007 First Light launches worldwide on 27 March 2026.
