Harold Lee and Kumar Patel are set for another big-screen adventure. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the creative minds behind the global sensation Cobra Kai, have closed a deal to write a new installment of the Harold & Kumar buddy stoner comedy series. Hurwitz and Schlossberg are also set to direct, marking a full-circle moment as they started their Hollywood journey by writing the original film and making their directorial debut with the second.
This new Harold & Kumar feature is being developed at Lionsgate-owned Mandate Pictures. While no deals have been officially finalized, John Cho and Kal Penn are anticipated to return as the titular best friends. There’s no word yet on whether Neil Patrick Harris, who played a pivotal and increasingly bizarre version of himself in the previous films, will also be back for the ride.
Hurwitz and Schlossberg expressed their excitement for the project in a joint statement: We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.
The original 2004 film, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, became an unexpected cult hit. It masterfully blended stoner comedy with social commentary, breaking down stereotypes while delivering increasingly bizarre and hilarious adventures. That film’s success spawned two sequels: Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011).
After launching their careers with Harold and Kumar, Hurwitz and Schlossberg went on to write and direct the 2012 comedy American Reunion and produce the 2018 film Blockers. Their Hollywood journey took a wildly successful turn when they teamed up with Josh Heald to create, showrun, and executive produce Cobra Kai. The series, a sequel to the classic Karate Kid movies, became a multi-generational hit for Netflix, blending nostalgia with fresh talent, and receiving an Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series in its third season.

The recent wrap of Cobra Kai’s sixth and final season on Netflix has cleared the way for the power trio to focus on their next big project – bringing Harold and Kumar back to their roots of R-rated, absurd comedy. Greg Shapiro, who produced the original Harold & Kumar movies and later won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, is also on board to produce this new installment.
While a production start date and potential release window remain under wraps, the prospect of Cho and Penn returning for another chaotic journey under the guidance of their original creators has fans buzzing.
