Legendary Entertainment is reportedly in early discussions with several prominent actors for its upcoming live-action Street Fighter film. Jason Momoa, known for his roles in Aquaman and Dune, is among the names being considered, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Joining him in early negotiations are Andrew Koji, from Warrior and Bullet Train, Noah Centineo, who recently starred in Warfare, and WWE star Roman Reigns. While no official casting announcements have been made, these talks suggest significant movement on the project.

Director Kitao Sakurai Attached

The adaptation of the popular fighting video game franchise is a partnership between Legendary and Capcom, the Japanese video game developer and publisher. Kitao Sakurai, best known for his work on The Eric Andre Show and directing episodes of the Twisted Metal TV series, was announced earlier as the film’s director. Capcom is said to be deeply involved with the production.

Street Fighter is one of the most enduring fighting video game franchises globally. The series began in 1987 with its arcade debut, but it was Street Fighter II, released in 1991, that truly revolutionised one-on-one fighting games by offering a choice of characters and fighting techniques. The latest instalment, Street Fighter 6, was released in June 2023 and received the award for best fighting game at the 2023 Game Awards.

Hollywood’s Growing Interest in Video Game Adaptations

This new Street Fighter film follows previous screen adaptations, including the 1994 feature film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and 20th Century Fox’s 2009 release, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Hollywood has shown increased interest in adapting video games, especially after the recent box office successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is also scheduled for release next month.
