Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh will headline The Surgeon, an upcoming action film where her surgical skills become deadly weapons. The movie, produced by Thunder Road, the company behind the John Wick franchise, is being introduced to buyers at the Cannes market.

The film centers on a retired surgeon, played by Yeoh, who is abducted and compelled to perform an operation on a mysterious patient. Unbeknownst to her captors, her extensive 35 years of surgical experience transform her into a formidable adversary. According to the film’s premise, audiences can anticipate “an explosive and brutal confrontation during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies in a visual style that defies anything you have seen before.”

The Surgeon is written and directed by Roshan Sethi, a physician and the co-creator of the medical drama series The Resident. Sethi expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m so excited to bring something brand new and innovative to the action genre based heavily on my medical background. I cannot think of a better partner than Michelle, the iconic queen of action who will be using her skills in a different and surprising way in this film…”

The film marks a reunion for producer Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road with Patrick Wachsberger, who previously collaborated on the John Wick and Sicario franchises. Iwanyk commented, “Roshin wrote an incredibly complex and compelling character that was able to excite one of the world’s great actresses in Michelle Yeoh. I can’t wait to see what that collaboration cooks up. And to work again with Patrick, who was so instrumental in getting the John Wick and Sicario franchises made, is a great thrill for Thunder Road.”

Wachsberger echoed this sentiment, saying, “Michelle is a cinematic force and a perfect match for this role. She blends grace and power, bringing emotional depth to even the most physical sequences. With her leading the cast and Roshan drawing on his singular perspective to tell a story only he could, we have a captivating franchise coming to life, and we look forward to bringing it to audiences around the world.”

Yeoh, who recently won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once and appeared in Wicked, is set to bring her signature blend of strength and nuance to this unique action role. The producers hope that The Surgeon will be the first instalment of a successful franchise.
