Tadanobu Asano Scores Golden Globe Win for ‘Shōgun’

Tadanobu Asano wins Golden Globe for FX's Shōgun, alongside co-stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai

Tadanobu Asano just added another trophy to Shōgun’s  growing collection. The actor snagged the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for his portrayal of Kashigi Yabushige in the hit FX series.  

In a charming acceptance speech, Asano humbly introduced himself to the audience. “Maybe you don’t know me. I’m an actor from Japan, and my name is Tadanobu Asano. Wow!” he said, clearly surprised and delighted by the win.  

Asano beat out some serious competition in the category, including Hollywood legends like Harrison Ford (Shrinking) and Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story). He also revealed that he was accepting the award during a brief break from filming another project – talk about dedication!

Co-star Hiroyuki Sanada also scored a major victory at the 2025 Golden Globes, snagging the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his powerful portrayal of Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun.

Sanada faced some stiff competition in the category, going up against heavy hitters like Donald Glover (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), and Gary Oldman (Slow Horses). But his performance in Shōgun clearly resonated with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Meanwhile, Anna Sawai has earned her place in Golden Globes history by winning a Golden Globes for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Drama, making her the first Asian actress to win in this category since Yoko Shimada achieved the same feat in 1981 – both for their portrayals of Lady Mariko in different adaptations of Shōgun.

Sawai, who plays the captivating Toda Mariko in the FX series, was up against some tough competition, including Kathy Bates (Matlock) and Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon). But her performance clearly captivated the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
