Netflix’s dystopian anthology series Black Mirror is set to return in 2025 with a stacked cast, including Awkwafina, Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, and Issa Rae. The seventh season will feature six new episodes, with one serving as a sequel to the fan-favorite “USS Callister” from Season 4.

Creator Charlie Brooker promises a return to the show’s roots, telling Tudum, “It’s back to basics in many ways. They’re all sci-fi stories, but there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.”

The new season will also experiment with format, featuring two feature-length episodes alongside four standard-length installments. Brooker teased a variety of genres and tones, saying, “You can expect a mix of genres and styles. We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional.”

One of the most anticipated episodes of Season 7 is the sequel to USS Callister, which followed a disgruntled programmer who created a virtual reality world within a video game to escape his real-life frustrations.

Brooker confirmed the return of the spaceship and its crew, saying, “Fans of the show will recognize the cast of a certain spaceship from one of our episodes reappearing. We’ve done a sequel for the first time in Black Mirror history.”

The sequel will pick up where the original episode left off, with the crew of the USS Callister facing new challenges in their virtual reality world. Brooker teased, “We continue the story from where we left off. And there are some new characters as well. There is new stuff to do with where they’ve now ended up versus where they were.”

Season 7 boasts an impressive cast, with Awkwafina, Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, and Issa Rae joining returning stars Cristin Milioti and Billy Magnussen. Other notable additions include Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

The specific roles these actors will play remain a mystery, adding to the anticipation for the new season.

Black Mirror has been praised for its dark, satirical take on technology and its impact on society. The show has tackled themes such as social media addiction, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, often with chilling and thought-provoking results.
