In a move that surprised the music world, the Smashing Pumpkins have unveiled their new axe-wielder, Kiki Wong. Chosen from a staggering 10,000 applicants, Wong’s rise from bedroom shredder to alt-rock icon is nothing short of meteoric.

“I never thought little ole 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment,” Wong exclaimed in an Instagram post. But this moment is the culmination of years of dedication and a passion ignited by her father’s musical legacy.

“My father used to perform in a band with his brothers and sisters,” Wong shared in an interview with AAPI Musicians. “They played traditional Chinese instruments and sang.” This familial connection to music laid the foundation for Wong’s own journey, eventually leading her to the Smashing Pumpkins’ open audition.

“I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered,” admitted Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. “It’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family.” Wong’s talent and dedication clearly resonated with the band, who recognized her as the perfect fit to fill the void left by Jeff Schroeder’s departure.

Wong’s path to becoming a Pumpkin wasn’t without its challenges. “At first glance, I didn’t think it was a real post,” she confessed, recalling the moment she saw the audition announcement. However, encouraged by her boyfriend, she took a leap of faith and applied.

After a nerve-wracking Zoom call and a face-to-face audition in LA, Wong’s meticulous preparation paid off. “I practiced those songs in and out like my life depended on it for three weeks,” she revealed. “I watched every live video I could find on the internet of those songs from ’96 to 2023, trying to analyze every move they made.”

The day after her audition, Wong received the life-changing call. “I honestly haven’t felt joy like that since my baby was born,” she shared. Now, as a new mom and a new Pumpkin, Wong is ready to rock the world with her bandmates.

“I hope to see more young emerging AAPI musicians who want to keep rock ‘n’ roll alive,” she stated. “I hope that I can help inspire them to go against the grain of what we’re told we’re supposed to do and feel safe to creatively express themselves through music and not feel judged.”

With her undeniable talent, unwavering determination, and the support of her new bandmates, Kiki Wong is poised to make her mark on the music world. The Smashing Pumpkins’ next chapter is just beginning, and Wong is ready to shred her way into the hearts of fans worldwide.
