HBO is set to transport the opulent world of Crazy Rich Asians from the big screen to the small screen, as confirmed by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content.

Speaking to Variety, Bloys revealed: “There are other properties like The Conjuring, which is a big movie franchise that we’re developing into a series, as well as Crazy Rich Asians. We’re developing in DC, the Green Lantern property, as a series as well.”

The 2018 romantic comedy, based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, became a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its extravagant portrayal of Singapore’s elite and a heartwarming love story. The film followed Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), an American professor who discovers her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) belongs to one of Asia’s wealthiest families.

While details about the TV adaptation remain scarce, it’s unclear whether it will continue the story from the proposed spin-off film focusing on Astrid (Gemma Chan) and Charlie (Harry Shum Jr.), or explore new storylines within the Crazy Rich universe.

The film’s success has led to anticipation for sequels and spin-offs, but the format of the TV series has divided fans. Some crave a sequel film, others are open to a series format, while some oppose any further adaptation.

The potential of a series format was previously suggested by Film Comment critic Michael Sragow, who noted: “A binge-able series might have been a better way to go, since the script squeezes a sprawling supporting cast into boisterous caricatures and transforms an intricate flow chart of status among Singapore’s superrich into a flood of affectations.”

The series could delve into the plots of the remaining books in Kwan’s trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, offering a broader canvas to explore the complex relationships and lavish lifestyles of the characters.

While fans await further news on the TV series, the film is now available on Netflix for those who want to revisit the glitz and glamour of Crazy Rich Asians.
