Bailey Anne Kennedy, a 31-year-old Cambodian American immigrant, has broken barriers as the first transgender woman to be crowned Miss Maryland USA. Kennedy, who is also the first Asian-American and military spouse to hold the title, made history when she was crowned on June 1st.

Kennedy’s journey to the crown was not without its challenges. After immigrating to the US at age 11, she faced bullying and discrimination due to her accent and cultural differences. However, she persevered, finding confidence in her identity and using her experiences to fuel her passion for advocacy.

Despite the negativity she has faced from some online critics, Kennedy remains focused on the positive impact she can make. She hopes to use her platform to inspire young people who may feel marginalized or excluded and to show that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of their background.

“The work that I will do for the remainder of my life is to make sure that children who feel like me will never have to worry about the consequences of being who they are by simply being myself and being a positive contribution to society,” Kennedy shared on Instagram.

In addition to being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, Ms Kennedy is a vocal supporter of military families and has spoken about overcoming language barriers as an immigrant. In an interview with DC News Now, she said, “I kept getting so emotional all day because I knew it was bigger than me. I knew that it only took 67 years for married women to compete freely. Let alone to have an immigrant who happened to be bullied all of life for her accent and her different ways of doing things.”

The Miss USA organization has expressed its support for Ms Kennedy and the transgender community, stating that “Every person has the right to live authentically and pursue every opportunity, and we believe Bailey Anne embodies these values.”

Ms Kennedy will compete for the Miss USA title in Los Angeles in August, where she hopes to continue breaking barriers and inspiring others.
