Netflix has confirmed a 25 April 2024 release date for its live-action adaptation of the iconic manga City Hunter. The eagerly awaited film stars Ryohei Suzuki as Ryo Saeba, a skilled “sweeper” known for his womanizing ways and expert marksmanship, navigating Tokyo’s criminal underworld. Misato Morita plays his partner, Kaori Makimura, whose hot-headed personality keeps Ryo in check.

City Hunter, created by Tsukasa Hojo, was originally a manga series running from 1985 to 1991. It gained immense popularity for its blend of action, comedy, and a touch of romance. The story follows Ryo Saeba and his partner Kaori Makimura as they take on various jobs, ranging from bodyguard jobs to complex criminal takedowns. Ryo’s tendency to get distracted by beautiful women often adds a comedic layer to their dangerous assignments.

The success of the manga led to several anime adaptations, including television series spanning multiple seasons, movies, and OVAs (Original Video Animations). City Hunter has gained a dedicated following worldwide.

“I felt immense pressure to do justice to the character, considering its popularity in the original manga and animation,” said Masanobu Ando, who portrays Kaori’s brother, Hideyuki Makimura. “I hope both existing fans of City Hunter and newcomers alike will enjoy the film.”

Fumino Kimura, who plays the detective Saeko Nogami, added: “The role of Saeko was a daunting offer, and I couldn’t imagine myself playing it. However, having the support and guidance of Ryohei Suzuki, our leading man and a fan of the original work, was incredibly reassuring. I’m confident that both longtime fans and new audiences are in for a treat with this film.”

The City Hunter film is part of Netflix’s expanding Japanese content slate for 2024. This includes the feature film Drawing Closer, a romantic drama by Takahiro Miki, and The Parades, directed by Michihito Fujii, about a group of ghosts who reconnect with the living.

“We’re trying to make something more authentic [to the manga],” Suzuki said about his role as Ryo Saeba. “The atmosphere will be a little darker… But it’s going to be very enjoyable.”

Japanese-language content is increasingly popular on Netflix, becoming the third most-viewed non-English content in 2023, behind Korean and Spanish.
