TMZ reports that Lionel Messi has landed himself in hot water after wearing a controversial Dolce & Gabbana ‘Chinese pig shirt’.

The Barcelona FC captain was seen wearing the $500 T-shirt as he touched down in Barcelona for a holiday.

Since 2018, Dolce & Gabbana has been an incredibly unpopular brand with the Chinese. In November last year, the luxury brand was slammed for its “racist chopsticks” advert. D&G co-founder Stefano Gabbana defended the advert and called China “ignorant dirty smelling mafia”.

One month later Dolce & Gabbana’s branding hit a record low after many Chinese, including Crouching Tiger actress Ziyi Zhang, boycotted the brand.

The Italian fashion group found itself once again amid another controversy with the Chinese after releasing Chinese New Year T-Shirts sporting pigs.

Hypebeast reported that Chinese netizens said “the designs water down the traditional holiday and insinuates that the brand only considers the Chinese market full of “pigs with money.”

The Argentina footballer was seen wearing the red version of the controversial T-Shirt, upsetting Chinese fans.
