Cretton directed 'Short Term 12' starring Captain Marvel's Brie Larson

Marvel Studios has hired Destin Daniel Cretton to direct its first Asian-led film, Shang-Chi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Destin Daniel Cretton has been hired to direct Shang Chi – Marvel Studios’ first film with an Asian lead.

Cretton is known for 2013 indie film Short Term 12, which starred Captain Marvel lead Brie Larson. He once again directed Larson in 2017’s The Glass Castle and is currently directing her with Black Panther’s Michael B Jordan in Just Mercy.

Dear White Peopole‘s Justin Tipper and Master Of None’s Alan Yang will also be working in Shang Chi. Wonder Woman 1984screenwriter Dave Callaham is penning the script.

Shang-Chi, AKA Master of Kung Fu, is a Marvel Comics character created in 1972 who eventually joins the Avengers. The character had his own series that ran for 125 issues and had a love interest with Deadpool’s ex, Domino.

In related news, Chinese internet users were not impressed by the idea of the film, claiming it was racist.
