The first Asian American actor to play Alexander Hamilton on Broadway made his debut on Saturday.

As reported by CNN, Marc dela Cruz has made history by becoming the first Asian American actor to take on the lead of Alexander Hamilton in the hit musical Hamilton on Broadway.

Cruz, who was born in Hawaii, is of Filipino-Japanese and American descent. The actor has been involved with Hamilton since November, playing many different roles.

On Saturday, Cruz debuted as lead character Alexander Hamilton. Other Filipino actors include Karla Garcia and Isa Briones, whilst Rachelle Ann Go and Christine Allado are part of London’s cast.

Actress Olivia Oguma showed Cruz as the lead in a pevealedost on Facebook.

“Tonight … we had the first Asian-American Alexander Hamilton in ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway. Just wanted to let everyone know. Marc de la Cruz I have never been more proud of anyone. I’m so happy for you,” she wrote.

In a post on Instagram, Cruz wrote “I am FILLED WITH GRATITUDE for the creators and originators of Hamilton. It’s an honor to help share this astoundingly crafted and important piece of theater.”

I think this video adequately represents my experience these past few weeks. Today I made my debut in Hamilton on Broadway. The love and support from this company is enormous and they have welcomed me with open arms. I’d like to say thank you to all of the extraordinary, hardworking people who make this show happen, to everyone at the Richard Rodgers Theatre who warmly welcomed me into the family, my incredible managers @davidmkrasner and @terryjsaperstein, the wonderful team at Telsey and an especially big thank you to the passionate and patient souls who taught me the show and got me ready. I am FILLED WITH GRATITUDE for the creators and originators of Hamilton. It’s an honor to help share this astoundingly crafted and important piece of theater. Special thank you to @jmiglehart for his words and @carvenslissaint for capturing the moment. #hamiltonbroadway #hamfam #isthisreallyhappening #wholiveswhodieswhotellsyourstory #linmanuelmiranda
