A play about a famous Manchester Chinese restaurant is currently touring in the UK.

Mountains: The Dreams of Lily Kwok tells the tale of the women behind Manchester’s Sweet Mandarin restaurant.

Based on the family memoir by Helen Tse, the play is written by In-Sook Chappell and is directed by Jennifer Tang.

The play follows the extraordinary life of Lily Kwok, from her childhood working in a silk factory, to the murder of her father, to the escape to the UK that separated her from her children.

According to the press release, “Helen has grown up in the UK, but always felt a piece of her story was missing. When she visits her grandmother’s birthplace in Hong Kong for the first time, she’s determined to find out who she really is and where she belongs.”

“Amidst the skyscrapers and bustling streets, she meets her grandmother, Lily Kwok, and steps into her past, discovering shocking family secrets that will change her life forever.”

What’s more, Sweet Mandarin’s Mabel’s Chicken Pot will be cooked live onstage.

Siu-See Hung will star as Helen Tse and Tina Chiang will play Lily Kwok. Other actors include Ruth Gibson, Andy Kettu, Matthew Leonhart, Rina Takasaki and Minhee Yeo.
