Katie Leung has been cast as the lead in RSC’s upcoming play Snow in Midsummer.
Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig’s play is a contemporary re-imagination of Guan Hanquing’s Chinese classic drama, directed by Justin Audibert.
Katie Leung will play lead character Dou Yi – a young girl who is framed for a crime she didn’t commit.
Snow in Midsummer is the first production in RSC’s Chinese Classics Translations Project, which aims to bring Chinese classics to a modern western audience.
Leung is joined by Jacqueline Chan, Andrew Koji, Wendy Kweh, Sarah Lam, Andrew Leung, Jonathan Raggett, Richard Rees, Colin Ryan, Lucy Sheen, Kevin Shen and Daniel York.
Leung, best known for her role as Cho Chang in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter film series, is not unfamiliar with theater work. Her on-stage repertoire includes Wild Swans (Young Vic), The World of Extreme Happiness (National Theatre) and The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures (Hampstead Theatre).

Snow in Midsummer runs at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 2 to 25 March, with previews from 23 February.
