Butler Tech teacher suspended for making ‘racist’ remarks at Asian student

A Butler Tech teacher has been suspended for making racially insensitive comments to an Asian student.

The female teacher’s remarks were taped by a student in the Leadership and Community Engagement class offered by Butler Tech at Fairfield Senior High School.

The teacher’s remarks included, “We’re waiting for it to come on. You broke it already. What’s wrong with you? You Chinese are supposed to make computers, and you’re breaking them instead.”

A student reported the incident to Fairfield school officials who contacted Butler Tech immediately. The teacher was suspended on paid leave on 6 October 2016, on the day of the incident.

Micahel Beauchat, spokesman for Butler Tech did not release the name of the teacher but said, “The content of the video does not align with our mission or our core values… Comments like those heard on the video have no place in the classroom, and we fully understand the community’s disappointment. We are disappointed too.”

The investigation is not yet completed but the teacher has reportedly begun cultural sensitivity training. The teacher had been with the school for two years. Fairfield administrators asked the teacher to not return to the school.

“We will respect the wishes of the district and the teacher won’t be back in Fairfield,’’ Beauchat said.
